Young Victorian Farmers Called to Enter Challenge

The Royal Agricultural Society of Victoria (RASV) is encouraging teams of young farmers aged 16 to 30 to enter the Young Farmer Challenge.

Conducted annually by the RASV in partnership with Victorian Young Farmers, the Young Farmer Challenge is an entertaining, fast-paced event that promotes and celebrates excellence in farming and recognises the next generation of farmers.

For the first time ever, the Young Farmer Challenge is open to farmers and agribusiness professionals and it is no longer compulsory for teams to be a part of an agricultural society, which opens up the competition to a new audience.

Teams of four are required to race against the clock to complete a series of challenges that demonstrate the breadth of technical skills used by farmers in everyday field activities, such as stacking hay, leading an alpaca and reversing a ute.

The Victorian state final will be held on Saturday, 20 September at the 2014 Royal Melbourne Show, with the winning team sponsored by the RASV to compete in the national final at the Australian Young Farmer Challenge, which will be staged during the 2015 Royal Adelaide Show.

RASV CEO Mark O’Sullivan said the Young Farmer Challenge recognises and celebrates young farmers’ involvement in the agricultural industry.

“The Young Farmer Challenge is an exciting initiative that showcases the talents of the modern day farmer, providing young people with a unique opportunity to be recognised and celebrated in front of thousands of people.

“The RASV is thrilled to host the Victorian state final again and encourages farmers aged 16 to 30 to assemble a team and get involved to celebrate their role in Victoria’s agricultural industry,” said Mr O’Sullivan.

Along with the glory of being crowned Victoria’s Champion Young Farmer Team, the winning team will take home more than $4000 in cash and prizes.

The Australian Young Farmer Challenge is a national initiative developed by the Australian Council of Agricultural Societies (ACAS) and run by agricultural societies and organisations across Australia, including the RASV.
