The 2016 Australian Sheep & Wool Show was held in Bendigo in July with over 30,000 people attending over three days. As part of an ongoing commitment to supporting regional agricultural events, RASV’s increased partnership with the event included sponsorship of the National Merino Pairs, Young Stud Masters Muster and Youth Champion Award and the Bendigo Festival of Lamb. Heralded as the Merino industry’s major award at the Show, the National Merino Pairs Competition saw finalists from each state compete for National Champion, which was awarded to Chris and Mitch Hogg, Navanvale Stud, WA, who took home the $5000 cash prize.
In a continued effort to identify, nurture and encourage youth within agriculture, RASV presented the Young Champion Award to Victorian sheep farmer, Alexander Lewis, in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the industry. The award was presented as part of celebrations at the Young Stud Masters Muster, a networking event celebrating the next generation of leaders, held during the Sheep & Wool Show.
Providing further opportunity to showcase agriculture throughout the value chain, the Show also featured the Bendigo Festival of Lamb, where local chefs and butchers participated in carving and cooking demonstrations over three days of lamb appreciation.
Continuing their success from earlier in the year, the 2016 RASV McLennan-McColl Flock of the Year winners Rob and Tim Hayes of Tarcombe Herefords were also named Most Successful Commercial Exhibitor and Champion Medium Merino Fleece at the event.
The Australian Sheep & Wool marked its 139th year in 2016 and its 17th year in Bendigo after moving from Melbourne.
