Media Release: Next Generation Farmers Called to Step Up to the Challenge

Next generation farmers are being invited to show off their agricultural skills for the chance to represent Victoria in the Young Farmer Challenge with entries now open.

Conducted annually by The Royal Agricultural Society of Victoria (RASV) in partnership with Victorian Young Farmers, the Young Farmer Challenge is an entertaining, fast-paced event that promotes and celebrates excellence in farming and recognises the next generation of farmers.

This exciting event sees teams of four people race to complete a series of challenges that demonstrate the breadth of technical skills used every day by farmers, such as stacking hay, leading an alpaca and erecting a portable electric fence.

Points are deducted for incorrect and unsafe techniques.

Open to young people aged 16-30, the Victorian final of the Young Farmer Challenge will take place in front of a captivated crowd at the 2015 Royal Melbourne Show, with the winning team selected to represent Victoria at the National Finals.

Along with the title of Victoria’s Champion Young Farmer Team, the winning team will take home more than $4,000 in prizes.

The Australian Young Farmer Challenge is a national initiative developed by the Australian Council of Agricultural Societies (ACAS) and run by agricultural societies and organisations across Australia, including RASV.

RASV CEO Mark O’Sullivan said the Young Farmer Challenge is an unrivalled opportunity to recognise young farmers’ contributions to the agricultural industry.

"The Young Farmer Challenge is an initiative that showcases the talents of modern day farming, and provides a unique opportunity to celebrate the next generation of farmers," said Mr O’Sullivan.

"RASV is thrilled to once again host the Victorian state final and encourages young farmers to assemble a team and get involved to celebrate their role in Victoria’s agricultural industry."

The Victorian State Final will be held on the evening of Saturday 19
