Hamilton local Tom Upton has been awarded the Royal Agricultural Society of Victoria’s (RASV) Emerging Leader Scholarship for his commitment to agriculture.
The scholarship worth $5,000 will provide Mr Upton with a financial boost to help complete his agricultural studies and will provide access to the wider agri-professional network.
Mr Upton who is currently studying a Bachelor of Business (Agriculture) at Marcus Oldham applied for the Scholarship to meet and learn from successful people in agriculture advance his career prospects.
“Winning the RASV Emerging Leader Scholarship will give me the opportunity to gain the business skills needed to advance in agriculture and make a difference to the sector,” Mr Upton said.
“As the world’s population increases and requires more protein we as farmers will need to be able to step up and meet demands. I believe that there is a fantastic future ahead for the agriculture industry and one that I definitely want to be a part of.”
RASV Chief Executive Officer Mark O’Sullivan said it‘s very pleasing to be able to provide the next generation of agri-professionals the boost they need to complete their studies and enter the work force.
“Agriculture is a booming industry that will need passionate and skilled people like Tom to be able to meet the demands of a growing population.
“The scholarship will provide students with the extra lift needed to complete their studies while connecting them with other agri-professionals,” Mr O’Sullivan said
Mr Upton said while many peers are chasing jobs in the mining industry he believes that agriculture has a lot to offer those seeking a varied and exciting career.
“Australian Agriculture is growing and the demand for young skilled workers will only get stronger across the country. I believe that in time more people will want to work in agriculture and for me, there is no better industry to be,” he said.
