Connamara named 2015 RASV Heifer Challenge Champion

The Royal Agricultural Society of Victoria (RASV) has named Connamara Angus of Ruffy the 2015 RASV Heifer Challenge Champion after almost two weeks of on-farm judging across Victoria and NSW, as part of the 23rd annual Stock & Land Beef Week.

In the fourth year of the competition, RASV awarded the prestigious honour and $3000 cash prize to the Angus stud. This is the second time Connamara, exhibited by Michael Hill, has been a finalist in the RASV Heifer Challenge. The Champion was selected by respected former Angus breeder, stock agent and competition judge, Jack Woodburn.

RASV CEO Mark O’Sullivan said the Heifer Challenge highlights the quality of the herd replacement females in seed stock operation throughout the regions and the calibre of competition in 2015 was outstanding.

“RASV congratulates Connamara on being named Champion of the 2015 Heifer Challenge from an exceptionally high standard of entries.  We are delighted to support Stock & Land Beef Week through this important competition, which reinforces our commitment to promote and showcase excellence in agriculture,” said Mr O’Sullivan.

Reserve Champion was awarded to Simmental stud Wormbete, of Illabo, NSW, who received a $1500 cash prize as part of presentations during the Beef Week Celebratory Dinner at Silks in Bendigo earlier this evening.

The RASV Heifer Challenge received 47 entries in 2015 with participants required to display pens of 10 registered heifers for judging, which took place over nine days from Tuesday 27 January to Wednesday 4 February, 2015.

Mr Woodburn, a renowned cattle judge from Forbes, NSW said his was an enjoyable but challenging task because of the high quality of entries, evidenced by his request to increase the number of finalists this year from 10 to 12.

“It’s been the most marvellous experience.  I’ve spent almost a lifetime judging cattle and this is one of the most worthwhile competitions I’ve been involved in,” said Mr Woodburn. “The quality I saw over the nine day period was absolutely exceptional and I really believe our beef industry is in very good hands.”

Conducted by Stud Beef Victoria, Stock & Land Beef Week provides more than 180 beef producers with a unique opportunity to market, showcase and select genetics for breeding operations.
