Western Australian Distilleries paving the way for local spirits industry
The results are in for the inaugural Australian Distilled Spirits Awards (ADSA), with seven major trophies handed out to the country’s top distillers last night during the official awards ceremony held in Melbourne.
The news follows rigorous judging of 115 entries by an elite panel of industry experts, educators, specialist retailers and bartenders last week at Melbourne Showgrounds.
Western Australian distillers took the lead, receiving three trophies, with Great Southern Distillery’s Limeburners Peated Single Malt Barrel M227 taking home Champion Australian Whisky, The Tailor Made Spirits Company awarded Champion Australian Gin for The West Winds- The Sabre, and Champion Australian Rum going to Hoochery Distillery’s Spike’s Reserve.
South Australia’s VOK Beverages was awarded Champion Trophy for Brandy with their Black Bottle XO Brandy, whilst Champion Australian Liqueur went to Queensland’s Castle Glen Australia for their Pecan & Hazelnut Liqueur.
Victoria and Tasmania each received one major Trophy with Edgemill Group’s Zeus Oyzo winning Champion Australian Alternative Spirit, and Tasmania’s Lark Distillery named Champion Australian Distiller.
The Champion Distiller Trophy acknowledges outstanding achievement in and consistency of distilling excellence. The trophy is awarded to the distiller with the highest average score, calculated on the basis of the distiller’s three top scoring entries.
On the win, Bill Lark of Lark Distillery said "It's a proud moment for me, and a wonderful thing to see how we (the industry) are growing and the respect that our industry is gaining overseas.
Bars that we once dreamed of being in are now wanting desperately to have more Australian spirits, and Melbourne really is the mecca for that. Winning this award is a huge honour and surprise."
Conducted by The Royal Agricultural Society of Victoria and supported by the Australian Distillers Association, the awards program responds to the changing nature and recent significant growth of the emerging Australian spirits industry. The ADSA were designed to provide Australian distilleries with the opportunity to benchmark their product against that of their peers and gain invaluable feedback from respected industry experts.
