Horse competitions have been an integral part of the Royal Agricultural Society of Victoria’s events since its inception and in 1842 the first horse competition was held.

Unfortunately this was to be the first and only show for the newly formed RASV and it wasn’t until 1848 that it recommenced agricultural competitions under the name of the Moonee Ponds Farmers’ Society with the first ploughing match held in the area around Flemington.

Today the Royal Melbourne Show Horses in Action program includes World Cup Showjumping, the prestigious Garryowen Equestrienne Turnout and Exhibition Eventing as part of the widespread variety of classes on offer.

The Horses in Action Committee has five members, each of whom is appointed by the RASV’s Board of Directors. The Committee’s role is to work with and advise the RASV to deliver events held during the Royal Melbourne Show.

Horses in Action Committee Members:

  • Wayne Loughnan (appointed 2016)
    Leanne Taranto  (appointed 2014)
  • Brett Hickey (appointed 2011)
  • Helen Ranken (appointed 2011)
  • Melinda Ralph (appointed 2011)
